How and why were Americans divided over these issues?|||As for your last question, white Southerners were generally against Johnson's policies, since such legislation tended to help Southern blacks while upsetting the Southern white power structure. The irony is that Johnson was a Texan.





Traditionally Southern whites voted Democratic. Kennedy's and Johnson's approach to civil rights turned many Southern whites toward the Republicans.|||He continued w/ FDR's vision of leveling the playing field so low and moderate income Americans could escape the sharecropper status that the GOP-conserv policies had held them locked into.
